The Devil’s Backbone is a notable underwater geological formation located off the coast of Harbour Island in the Bahamas. It is a shallow coral reef ridge that stretches for several miles, creating a series of submerged ridges and coral heads along the eastern side of the island.

The Devil’s Backbone gets its name from the challenging navigational hazards it presents to boaters, especially during low tides. The submerged ridges and coral heads can be treacherous for vessels, which is why it is important to navigate the area with caution and local knowledge.

However, the Devil’s Backbone is also a popular spot for snorkeling and diving due to its abundant marine life and vibrant coral formations. Snorkelers and divers can explore the shallow reefs and encounter a variety of tropical fish, colorful corals, and other fascinating marine species. The clear turquoise waters surrounding the Devil’s Backbone offer excellent visibility, making it a captivating underwater playground for underwater enthusiasts.

For those who prefer to stay on land, the Devil’s Backbone provides a scenic backdrop and serves as a reminder of the beautiful and diverse marine ecosystem found in the Bahamas. The rugged beauty of the submerged reef ridge adds to the charm and allure of Harbour Island, attracting visitors from around the world.

If you are planning to visit the Devil’s Backbone for snorkeling or diving purposes, it is advisable to consult with local dive operators or experienced guides who can provide the necessary information, safety guidelines, and assistance to make the most of your underwater exploration in this unique and intriguing location.

The Devils Backbone is one of the most beautiful reef systems in the world. The devil’s backbone is a shallow and jagged-edge reef, extending across the northern end of Eleuthera, about 1.4 miles northeast of Spanish Wells. During a dive you can encounter snapper, grunts, parrotfish, angelfish, sharks, stingrays, Nassau grouper, moray eels, and brain coral formations. We dive here all the time and always experiencing something new. The reef is so vast and wide that you can be there for hours and see many different things.
